I Was Waiting

They had always been best friends. He cracked a terrible joke; she laughed, head thrown back, sunlight catching her in a way that made his chest ache.

Oh.

He spoke her name, voice shaky.

She glanced at him, still smiling. “Yeah?”

He hesitated. Was he really about to ruin this?

“Took you long enough,” she said while taking taking his hands, squeezing lightly.

His breath hitched. “You knew?”

Her look turned knowing. “I was waiting for you to catch up.”
