The Love That Never Was

She found the black-and-white photo tucked beneath old quilts in the attic.

A young couple sat on the hood of a car, staring at each other like the world didn’t exist.

Her grandmother chuckled from the doorway. “Ah, that was the love of my life.”

She frowned. “But… that’s not Grandpa.”

The old woman’s eyes softened.

“Some love stories don’t get a happy ending,” she whispered.
